Welcome to Bushwick Dojo

Bushwick Dojo was founded in 2016 by Claire Keller, 6th Dan. We welcome beginners, visitors from other aikido organizations, and martial artists of all stripes who are interested in practicing the unique art of aikido in Brooklyn, NY. Our twice-weekly Brooklyn aikido program for beginners will have you rolling, falling, and throwing within a few months and will serve as a strong basis for all your future aikido training.

Bushwick Dojo is located in Green Fitness Studio, a modern, air conditioned facility with soaring ceilings, excellent light, and a two block walk to the L train, located in East Williamsburg. As part of our dojo membership you also gain full access to the use of the gym, sauna, roof garden, juice bar, locker rooms and showers, and other classes. Some members even cross-train in bJJ and boxing for an additional fee.

We focus on training in traditional aikido with an emphasis on strong technique, mindfulness, and responding to stress with a calm and relaxed attitude.

Via the G and L trains, we are a very short commute to Williamsburg, Canarsie, East New York, Bedford Stuyvesant, Greenpoint, Long Island City, Bushwick, and Fort Greene.

What kind of martial art is aikido?

“Aikido was developed in the early 20th century by a master Japanese martial artist, Morihei Ueshiba. It synthesizes elements of jiu jitsu, japanese sword forms, and other Japanese martial arts. Considered a cousin of modern Judo and Jiu Jitsu, it emphasizes powerful throws, joint locks, and other submission techniques. It is unique in that for practice, it pairs an attacker and a defender who are able to perform their techniques with full contact. Learning how to fall, roll, and otherwise survive a throw unscathed is central to the art of aikido.”
